SAD NEWS

I am extremely sorry to report the death of Amy Sidaway. She died peacefully on Boxing Day. Amy was the longest serving member of Solway Arts committee, and was much loved by anyone who knew her. She will be sorely missed by her friends and family.

Our sympathy goes out to her family- especially to Nigel.

Amy's funeral will be on Thursday 5 Jan at 10.20 in Carlisle Crematorium.

Fountain Gallery News

Wigton's new Fountain Gallery is doing well, and the seventeen of us in the cooperative are enjoying meeting so many positive people. We like bringing our work to a wider public, and are all delighted that our Christmas cards are selling so well. There are still two more late Thursday night shopping days to go before Christmas, and you may just catch us open on a Monday morning too! Don't forget that we are selling gift vouchers, and that we are happy to take a deposit on any article.

We are also planning a Saturday morning event to show off new work in February, when you will be able to buy Valentine's cards and gifts.

My new Earring Gift Cards at £9.50 are selling very well- I have just put another seven in the Gallery today, as well as some earrings using exotic and unusual gemstones- see pics below!

Here in the centre of what used to be the Kingdom of Rheged  we have a fondness for one whom we regard as our local saint, as well as patron saint of Glasgow. There are many churches, wells and other monuments near here- Bromfield Church, the nearby St Mungo's Castle, Kentigern's Church and well in Caldbeck and even Mungrisedale pay tribute to him.  Holme St Cuthbert History Society has some interesting information about him.

There will be poems, harp music and readings from Kathleen Herbert's book Bride of the Spear, which centres on the birth and parentage of Kentigern.  More information on the publisher's blog and website.

Fountain Gallery Late Night Opening

Wigton's new gallery will be opening its doors until 9.00pm next Thursday, and every Thusrday night until Christmas.

If you are looking for a special and different gift, come along on Thursday evening, 10th November, and enjoy a relaxed browse with a glass of mulled wine.

The Fountain Gallery is an unusual enterprise: it is run, financed and staffed by a cooperative of 17 artists and crafts people. Most galleries charge a hefty commission on sales- very understandably, to cover their costs- but in this cooperative, all sales revenue goes direct to the artist. The public can expect to pay considerably less therefore than they would in a conventionally run gallery. For example, an item which costs £100 in the Fountain Gallery would cost at least £150 almost anywhere else!
